Chapter 5: Ridgeport 1983
1
In 1983, Sue Ellen and Peter divorced. It was also the year that Sue Ellen created the Neighborhood Watch. They married in 1980. They started with great heat, but after â82, something lit a match that sparked the kindling, which ended up raging into a wild dumpster fire of a marriage by July of â83.
Peter decided he was ready for kids in the spring of â82. Sue Ellen laughed it off and told Peter that heâd married the wrong girl. She wasnât the motherly type. He thought she might come around, but when she refused to give up taking birth control, things turned south in more than one way.
âYou said you wanted kids when we were engaged!â heâd cry.
âI donât remember saying that,â she snapped back.
As the months dragged on, Sue Ellen became more controlling of her husband. In fact, Sue Ellen controlled her husband like a puppet. She was Pavlov, and he was her dog. Peter objected to this control at first but eventually just gave in. He knew that it was not worth fighting for.
âRemember, Iâm going out with a couple of friends this Friday night, dear,â he said.
âOh yeah, no, I think itâs better if we attend that aerobics class together, Iâve been talking about. They have one every Friday at the gym.â
âThis Friday? But Iâve been scheduling this with the guys for weeks. Canât we start the class next Friday?â
Sue Ellen flashed a look at Peter that said a firm âno,â and Peter hung his head obediently.
âYes, dear. Iâll call them up and say Iâm not going.â
Sue Ellen smiled widely and said, âPerfect. Youâll have a great time.â
About a year later, Sue Ellen suspected Peter of cheating, despite having no evidence. She thought because he kept late nights, something was off. Sue Ellen once followed him to his job because she suspected he was having a fling with a coworker. She was wrong. Instead of finding Peter flirting with some floozy, she walked into his office and saw him lurched over his computer, typing away.
âPeter! There you are.â
âUm, Sue Ellen? Iâm surprised to see you here.â
âOh, well, I missed you silly. I just thought Iâd drop by.â
âThatâs very sweet. Itâs good to see you.â
Sue Ellen smiled, but Peter tapped his finger on his desk, looking from the computer and back to his wife.
âHoney, Iâm sorry, but I have an awful lot of work to do. If I can finish a few things up here, though, Iâll do my best to get home early today, okay?â
âOh, sure, sure.â
Peter smiled at his wife, and Sue Ellen smiled back. Before heading out to leave, she scanned the room for any good-looking women. She didnât see any, not any, as beautiful as herself at least. She felt so much better than she had before she walked in until this one walked into the building as she was leaving. She was younger and at least just as pretty and dressed in a scandalous low-cut top. Her heart sank, and she began to ponder all over again if this could be a girl Peter was having an affair with.
